  1. A swimming pool branch circuit when properly derated with THWN copper conductors would be a minimum size of what, given a load of; 208 V, 3 HP, single-phase, continuous duty operation motor?
    • Correct Answer: NEC – Table 430.248, 430.22(A), 18.7 amperes * 125% = 23.4 amps, then size using Table 310.16 = 12 AWG.
  2. Use Ohm’s Law and the NEC to calculate the what the maximum distance would be between the source voltage and a motor load given the following conditions; 120 VAC, 1 HP pump motor, 13.8 amps FLA, 12 AWG copper, and Maximum voltage drop of 3%.
    • Correct Answer: NEC – Table 8, Chapter 9 for circular mil conversion and “k” calculations L = Vd x CM/(2 x I x K) = 120V x 3% x 6530CM/(2 x 13.8A x 12.9) = 66 feet.
  3. Use Ohm’s Law to calculate what the load current would be, given that a 11,000 watt electrical hot tub (spa heater) is connected to a 240-volt residential service?
    • Correct Answer: Ohms Law: I = P/E = 11000 watts / 240 volts = 46 A.
