Our Sample Exams Simulate Your Actual PSI State Exam!

1. Given a figure of a parallel circuit diagram of three bulbs, calculate the total current drawn in amperes if the three lamps are connected to a 120 VAC source. The three loads are 120, 300, and 300 Watts respectively.

  • The total power consumed is 120 W + 300 W + 300 W = 720 W. Then apply Ohm’s Law; I = P/E, I = 720 W / 120 V = 6 A

 

2. What would be the calculated lighting load for a building with the following specifications?

  • Factory operation: 24 hours per day
  • Number of fixture strip rows: 10
  • Number of LEDs per fixture: 25
  • Nameplate load per fixture: 0.56 A

▫ Step_1: Calculate the total number of fixtures: 10 rows x 25 fixture per row = 250 fixtures
▫ Step_2: Calculate the total nameplate load: 250 fixtures x 0.56 amperes/fixture = 140 A
▫ Step_3: Finally, continuous lighting is calculated at 125% as a rule of thumb (unless the question states non-continuous): 140 A x 1.25 = 170 A

 

3. What is the calculated feeder demand for the following three ranges, given they are each on separate branch circuits?

  • One, 12,000 W counter-mounted stove
  • Two, 6,000 W wall-mounted ovens

▫ Step_1: Note the demand listed in Table 120.55 column C for ranges 12-kW or less is 8,000 W
▫ Step_2: Calculate the demand for the two 6-kW ranges per Column B at 65%. So, 2 x 6,000W x 0.65 = 7,800 W
▫ Step_3: Finally, sum the net demand loads: 8,000 W + 7,800 W = 15,800 W = 15.8 kW

Candidates are responsible for bringing their own NEC book to the examination site:

▫ Examination questions are based on the current TDLR-adopted bound edition (NEC 2026).
▫ Any soft-bound edition of the NEC may be used for the examination.
▫ Loose-leaf, spiralbound, or ring-bound copies of the NEC book, will NOT be allowed in the examination room.
▫ Candidate’s NEC book may be highlighted, underlined, and/or contain notes prior to the examination session.
▫ NEC books may be tabbed with permanent index tabs manufactured and/or provided by the NEC book publisher.

 

License Requirements Summary:

  • Two Portion Exam (33 questions Calculations, and 75 questions NEC Knowledge), 5-hour time limit, minimum test score of 70%.
  • Candidates need to pass BOTH portions with a minimum score of 70% within the 1 year of approval to test with PSI. Failure to do so will require resubmitting the application to TDLR.
  • State Application Fee: $50
  • PSI Test Fee: $78 (for both exams)
  • Experience Requirement: 6 years (2 years with a journeyman license)
