1. Given that an 80,000 Btu/h gas furnace will have the combustion air supplied from a mechanical air supply system outdoor source, the combustion air in shall be at least __ Cubic Feet per Minute of ventilation?

  • Correct Answer: IFGC – CFM = (0.35 cu-ft/min/1,000 BTU/h) x (80,000 Btu/h) = 0.35 cu-ft/min x 80 = 28 CFM. A short cut would be 80 x 0.35 = 28 CFM

 

2. If two operators are performing “normal” technical maintenance of equipment inside a small 200 sq-ft room, what would be the required CFM?

  • Step_1: IMC – 0.5 cfm per sq-ft x 200 sq-ft = 100 CFM, or
  • Step_2: 20 cfm per person x 2 operators = 40 CFM.
  • Step_3: Design the minimum ventilation at the larger 100 CFM

 

3. If the compressor displacement is 10 cu-in, but the unit’s actual pump volume is only 6 cu-in, what is the pump’s calculated volumetric efficiency?

  • Correct Answer: MR&AC – Volumetric Efficiency = (Actual Volume / Theoretical Volume) x 100 = (6 cu-in / 10 cu-in) x 100 = 60%

License Requirements & Definitions Summary:

  • Class A: 120-question exam, 230-minute time limit, minimum test score 70%, PSI test fee = $74
  • Class B: 100-question exam, 170-minute time limit, minimum test score 70%, PSI test fee = $60
  • State Application Fee: $115
  • Experience Requirement: Your employment history must indicate at least 48 months (4 years) of practical experience with the tools of the trade in the preceding (6) years.

License numbers will have the following form:

Title/Class/Number/Endorsement code – TACL/A/000000/C for a “Class A Combined Endorsement Contractor.”

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. What is the difference between “Environmental Air Conditioning” and “Commercial Refrigeration/Process Heating and Cooling?

“Environmental Air Conditioning” means treating air to control temperature, humidity, cleanliness, ventilation, and circulation to meet human comfort requirements. Includes central air conditioning and heating.

“Commercial Refrigeration/Process Heating and Cooling” is limited to coolers, freezers, ice machines, and equipment that provides temperature and humidity controls.

2. What is the difference between a Class A and a Class B license?

Class A allows you to work on any size unit.

Class B allows you to work on cooling systems of 25 tons and under, and heating systems of 1.5 million BTUs/hour and under.
