Below are a few questions from your upcoming PSI state exam:

1. Using the NEC tables for full load current draw, what would the rated FLC for the following motor:  Single phase AC motor, Source Voltage – 200 Volts, Horsepower of motor – 3/4 HP

Answer:  7.9 amperes NEC – Table 430.248. Also study Table 430.250 and Table 430.52

2. A residential building complex contains the following: 20 studio apartments, each unit is 930 square feet, each contains a 6,000 Watt range, there is one common laundry room for the apartment complex.  Given this information, the small appliance and lighting load for each individual apartment is ___ VA, before applying any demand.

Answer:  5,790 VA  NEC – 220.12, 220.52 See Steps Below:

Step_1: Per 220.12(J) 930 sq-ft x 3 VA/sq-ft = 2,790 VA

Step_2: Per 220.12 Small Appliance 2 x 1,500 VA = 3,000 VA

Step_3: Sum the Lighting & Small Appliance = 5,790 VA (Total Load)

Note_1: This questions does NOT ask to apply the demand per 220.42, in which case the demand on the service panel would be: 5,790 VA – 3,000 VA = 2,790 VA x 0.35 = 977 VA (then     add back the 3,000 VA) = 977 VA + 3,000 VA = 3,900 VA (Net Load). See Annex D1a for the standard method of service load calculations.
