Below is a small sample of our exam prep questions:

  • Given that a 120/240 volt feeder supplies a household range rated at 7.6 kW, what will be the minimum branch-circuit overcurrent protection (OCP) for this counter-mounted cooking unit feeder?
    • Step_1: Use Column B, Number of Appliances Row 1 to find the demand load of 80%.
    • Step_2: Calculate the demand: 7,600 W x 0.80 = 6,080 Watts
    • Step_3: Use Ohm’s Law to calculate load I = P/E = 6,080 Watts / 240 Volts = 25.33 amps.
    • Step_4: Size minimum standard OCP based on Table 240.6(A), size up to 30 amps.
  • Given a transformer diagram shows a configuration of 120/208 V, 3-Phase, Delta-Wye System. The system has three 14 kW, single-phase, continuous balanced loads, each connected 120 V line to neutral. Assuming each of the three loads are resistive, what would be the minimum fuse required to protect conductor A in the transformer feeder circuit?
    • Step_1: Using Ohm’s Law: I = P/E = 14,000 W / 120 V = 116.67 amps.
    • Step_2: Since loads are continuous, multiply by 125%: 116.67 amps x 1.25 = 145.83 amps.
    • Step_3: Per 310.15(B)(16) 75 deg C column size up 150 A, and a 1/0 AWG.
    • Step_4: Per Table 240.6(A) size up OCPD to 150 A.
  • According to the NFPA 72, smoke detectors for door release service are to be closed in response to smoke flowing in either direction. Therefore, if the depth of wall section above the door is greater than 24 inches on both sides, how many ceiling-mounted or wall mounted detectors shall be required?
    • NFPA 72 2013 – 17.7.5.6.5.1(C) Smoke Detectors for Door Release Service. Two, one on each side of the doorway.
