  • How many 20A lighting circuits are required for the following dwelling?
    • Square Footage: 2,800 sq-ft (Outside Dimensions: 40 ft x 70 ft)
    • Operating Voltage: 120/240 V single-phase
    • Air Conditioning: 5,000 VA
    • Electric Heating: 10,000 VA
    • Other Appliances: 15,000 VA
      • Step_1: Calculate the maximum load on 20A circuit. P = I x E = 20 amperes x 120 volts = 2,400 VA.
      • Step_2: Understand that each 20A lighting circuit can only be loaded to 80% of capacity. Therefore, 2,400 VA x 0.8 = 1,920 VA maximum per circuit.
      • Step_3: Per Table 220.12 calculate the total lighting load; 3 VA/sq-ft x (40 ft x 70 ft) = 8,400 VA
      • Step_4: Calculate the number of 20A circuits required; 8,400 VA total / 1,920 VA max per circuit = 4.375 circuits.
      • Step_5: Five (5) circuits are required.
  • According to the NFPA 72, in high air movement areas, the smoke detector spacing shall be reduced. This location and spacing guidance is intended for early warning of fire. Therefore, what would be the required spacing per detector if the air changes per hour were designed at 15?
    • NFPA 72 2013 – Table 17.7.6.3.3.2, Figure 17.7.6.3.3.2. 500 sq-ft.
