  • A fire alarm system with a secondary power supply must have a minimum of what capacity requirements for standby and alarm?
    Answer: Standby = 24 Hr., Alarm = 5 Min. Reference: NFPA 72 – National Fire Alarm Code, 2010.
  • What is the load of a resistor in a 12-volt circuit with 0.25 amps current draw?
    Answer: 3 Watts. Reference: P=ExI 12v x 0.25a = 3W.
  • What is the maximum voltage of coaxial cable?
    Answer: 60 volts. Reference: NEC 2011, 820.15
  • Given a new single-family dwelling residential installation, how many smoke detectors are required if the two bedrooms are NOT near each other?
    Answer: Four. Reference: NFPA 72 11.5.1.1.
  • What is the minimum conductors required for installing a shunt type auxiliary system?
    Answer: 14 Awg. Reference: NFPA 72 9.4.3.2.1.

License candidates must be pre-approved prior to testing with PSI. Applications submitted are usually processed in 2-3 weeks, at which time PSI will mail each license candidate a postcard (or email) to indicate approval to take the examination.

PSI Test : $68.88

Experience requirement: 2 years on-the-job training under the supervision of an Low Voltage Electrical Contractor, Electrical Contractor, Master Electrician, or Inspector.

  • ES-3 Contractor Exam: 50 question exam, 145 minute time limit, test score 75%
  • Business & Law Exam: 50 question exam, 130 minute time limit, test score 75% or take state approved “Business & Law” course
