Below Are a Few Questions from Your Upcoming PSI State Exam:

1. What is the calculated air quantity in CFM of the following rectangular steel duct? Air velocity is 500 fpm, and duct internal measurements are 10″ x 20″.

  • Correct Answer: MR&AC, CFM = Velocity x Area = 500 fpm x [(10″ x 20″)/(144″)] = 694 CFM
  • (Note: Using the ACCA Ductulator (duct slide rule), align the 20-inch mark with the 10-inch arched line (or vice versa), locate the mark for 500 fpm, and note the approximate 650 CFM.)

2. A contractor must build a 15,000-square-foot educational auditorium. What would be the minimum outdoor ventilation in cubic feet per minute?

  • Correct Answer: IMC – Table 403.3.1.1 Auditoriums = 0.06 CFM/Sq-Ft.
  • Calculate: 15,000 sqft x 0.06 CFM/sqft = 900 CFM

3. Where communicating with the outdoors through horizontal ducts, each opening shall have a minimum free area of not less than 1 square inch per 2,000 Btu/h. Therefore, what would be the minimum calculated air opening area given a 60,000 BTU furnace?

  • Correct Answer: IFGC – 304.6.1,
  • Calculate: 60,000 BTUs / 2,000 BTUs per 1 sq-in = 30 sq-in
